Shylo was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada. When she was just weeks old, the
family moved to the Yukon. After years of traveling and living in
different communities throughout the Yukon and British Columbia, they
settled in Mount Currie, BC. In 1977 the family took up residence in a small
cabin on Lillooet Lake. Only meant to be a summer cottage, with no
electricity and no running water in the winters, life was simple. As
a child Shylo spent long hours hiking, canoeing, exploring forests, and
sketching the scenery around her. Shylo was captivated by the natural
world and had curiosity for all things wild. Due to the
family’s remote location, Shylo was home schooled off
and on throughout most of her elementary school years. This gave the
young artist
plenty of time for painting
and drawing. During her latter teen years the family gave up the rural,
alternative life style, and moved to Vancouver, BC where she perused a
degree in Biological Sciences from UCFV. In 1994 she had a career change
where she went back to the arts and became a marketing director/graphic
designer. In 1997 she was working as a
graphic designer for Western Canoeing and Kayaking when she fell in
love with the ocean and traveling by sea kayak. Shylo quickly found
that with kayaking, she could slip quietly along a coastline, in a
non-disruptive manner, and be a silent witness to it’s profound
beauty, power, and energy.
