Clarke Island Low Tide

A maze of over 100 islands and islets, the Broken Group Islands are located on Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The scenery and wildlife are stunning, the cultural history is fascinating, and the kayaking is world class. This location is my favourite place to bring new kayakers as it has something for every style of paddling.

Carlos Island

Carlos Island is a rocky island with very little vegetation but had amazing sandstone formations. I kayakled out here for the day from a great secluded camping spot over on Valdes Island.

Valdes Cliffs

Valdes Island is one of the Gulf Islands located in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada. It is across Porlier Pass from Galiano Island, which lies to the southeast. The island is popular with kayakers, boaters and has historically been the site of several human settlements. The sandstone cliffs are surreal in appearance with large over hangs and odd shapes carved by wind, tide, and rain. I was kayak camping here in the late summer of 2009 and had to of taken close to 500 pictures of this area.

Biography

Biography
Shylo was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada. When she was just weeks old, the family moved to the Yukon. After years of traveling and living in different communities throughout the Yukon and British Columbia, they settled in Mount Currie, BC. In 1977 the family took up residence in a small cabin on Lillooet Lake. Only meant to be a summer cottage, with no electricity and no running water in the winters, life was simple. As a child Shylo spent long hours hiking, canoeing, exploring forests, and sketching the scenery around her. Shylo was captivated by the natural world and had curiosity for all things wild. Due to the family’s remote location, Shylo was home schooled off and on throughout most of her elementary school years. This gave the young artist plenty of time for painting and drawing. During her latter teen years the family gave up the rural, alternative life style, and moved to Vancouver, BC where she perused a degree in Biological Sciences from UCFV. In 1994 she had a career change where she went back to the arts and became a marketing director/graphic designer. In 1997 she was working as a graphic designer for Western Canoeing and Kayaking when she fell in love with the ocean and traveling by sea kayak. Shylo quickly found that with kayaking, she could slip quietly along a coastline, in a non-disruptive manner, and be a silent witness to it’s profound beauty, power, and energy.

Artists Statement

I'm propelled by the urge to recreate some aspect of the beauty I've seen in the natural world. I strive to expose subtleties of the ever changing environment around me. Water, in all its forms is the driving force behind life and I'm astounded by it’s power and energy.
